I never got all that good at backing out, but good enough to clean up with a sharp scraper and a little modified Kunz squirrel tail when hanging the plank...and good enough for 1970's boatyard work, where most wooden boats were 'keep alive for another season' sort of work. My plane is an old split body round that I reshaped to 8" radius and just a bit of lengthwise curve, which lets you work each frame location, then fair up. You might want to try WoodenBoat Forum to get a better idea of how to do this and best bets for planes.
