Wiley, I guess I was typing while you were answering. I've seen you mention Bill's cocobolo plane before--I'd love to see that some day!

This past spring, I had the opportunity to make two planes of the same size (1-1/4"), side by side. One was E.Indian Rosewood, the other was a hybrid rosewood/cocobolo, which basically behaved and felt like "pure bred" cocobolo. Not surprisingly, they were both nice, but I definitely preferred the rosewood plane.

I have to say, while I do enjoy these exotics--especially the way they look--I've sold or got rid of all of them. For smoothing and small work, I use two beech coffin smoothers (1-1/4" and 1-3/4). I use them hard, pretty much every day, and I've no desire to change at this point. Beech is really just so dependable, and it just feels right.
