Subject:
the Demise of Local

Brian Holcombe
I have two local hardware stores that are doing well, they are smart in how they are approaching their offerings. They generally offer high quality construction materials, like WRC/Doug Fir 4x4's with tight growth rings, and good quality plywood. They're Festool dealers, which when you want something right away is very handy and the odds and ends like drill bits and screws are good brands.

I usually see the more established design/build firms shopping with these guys.

Both also offer kitchen cabinetry from the better brands and one has a serious custom shop that is doing high quality commercial work.

I also have a local lumberyard that has really started working well to accommodate the mid-small builders and furniture makers. They have become very competitive and really want to work with the local consumers, it's doing well for them.
