Globally a good suggestion. Except in my case I would be greatly over sharpening. Brian talks about planing a half a day. I don't plane 4 hours in a year fitting parts. It might take 2 minutes to level the drawer blades in a chest of drawers, 5 min to level a M&T joint or two on a case and this 5 min might only involve a few linear feet of shavings.
The only "extensive" planing I do is fitting drawers and even there it's minutes, not tens of minutes. My planing is so intermittent that I can't feel dulling increasing. Sharpening ever time I pick up a plane is way too often. I'll just stick with what I have been doing but I am sure the discussion has benefitted others.
