I've never encountered a finish adhesion problem caused by candlewax applied to the sole of a plane. After all, we're talking about a process that is frequently followed by things like scraping and sanding, and the amount of wax that's likely to transfer from a plane sole to the wood is tiny anyway.
All the same, you seem to have the judgement about right for when to sharpen and your planing needs so I'd just carry on. I've long stuck to the simple "plane's blunt, better sharpen" mantra. Then do it (quickly) and move on. Slainte.
