I had never thought of doing it that way, I was always starting off sighting down the sole as I would with my normal planes and a few tries maybe with scrap to ensure levelness. Thanks ! I do like how it feels to use it's like a more sure of itself version for my 41/2 Stanley although the stanly can take as fine shavings and is easier to tune. I might mess about with the iron a bit and hone it properly just to see what it's like although to be fair to the owner aside from the bevel being a tad used looking there is nothing at all wrong with the edge he put on.
Out of curiosity what angle is your one beveled to?
