Subject:
sharpening bevels and wear rate

Gary B.
After studying cap irons last friday...I'm curious if there has been any studies on sharpening bevels with regard to how long they hold an acceptable edge.

For instance, I've heard of people using only a 20 deg bevel on their paring chisels to make it easier to cut. They seem to get away with this when not using a mallet.

Since most bailey style planes are set at 45 degrees, why not sharpen to a 35 or even 40 degree bevel. It would still have clearance. Maybe it would be an interesting test either way.
