Don't be afraid of the streaks, etc. (but don't get runs if possible). It sands so easily that you can put on a fairly heavy coat with a brush and then spend a couple of minutes knocking it down with 400 or 600 the next day. I'd save the gray pad until you're close and want to start "buffing" it. It will give you an unbelievably nice finish.
