BTW,
I'va always applied this finish by hand (padding the shellac and brushing the varnish). I sand lightly (by hand) between each coat to smooth out the surface (P400 or P600), eliminating dust and any uneven spots or runs. By the time I get to the last coat, I apply it very thin, just wetting the surface. The resulting surface is glass smooth.
