I'm building a traditional jack plane which will have a walnut body with an ipe sole. The 8/4 walnut board that I have for the body has near vertical grain, which is counter to most recommendations that I've read on the internet. Should I go through the trouble of ripping and laminating the board so that the grain is horizontal and "correct" or continue as is... The ipe also has vertical grain, similar to the walnut.
I have a 3rd option of laminating ipe cheeks onto the walnut in addition to the sole, though that may introduce new complications relating to dissimilar wood movement.
Any thoughts on the matter?
