In keeping with the current philosophy of furniture conservation that any material added must be reversible, the museum shop removed all the previous botched finishing materials they could. They then added colored shellac to achieve the color of the original piece (no stain as that would not be reversible) and finally top coats of shellac.

Personally I find varnish easier to remove than shellac, but what I learned at the lecture is what Warren posted.
