For some reason I am unable to see your pictures. I recommend doing no abrasion, no oil and no varnish until you know whether the desk was made in 1710 or 1910, whether it is worth $80 or $80,000. For 18th century stuff we rarely use anything but wax, shellac, and hide glue. Things that can be removed.

Edit: I removed a story about a piece of furniture that was greatly devalued by careless refinishing.
