You should wander down to your local library and see what books they have on woodworking. A basic book (look for the older ones) will give you an introduction to saw types, and teach you how to distinguish crosscut from rip. Yes, you can get much of that by wandering around the interweb, but a book will generally have a coherent structure with all the information in one place.
