More on tapered tools

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
Someone in our club bought a tool chest that belonged to a mid 19th century woodworker (Krause) from Syracuse, NY. He reported to me that the early German planes in this chest had tapered blades and the planes apparently bought later in the US were parallel bladed. One might speculate that if there was much difference in function this person would have insisted his new blades be the same.

The squares were also tapered apparently having been forged from some smaller piece of metal and drawn out to a larger square. He reported that this tapered configuration was nice to handle.
