That is kind of the interesting thing about the storm. Public radio had its captive meteorologist on talking about this yesterday and the records appear to show that while the storm was big, it wasn't abnormally so. What this suggests then, is that bad luck played a large role in sinking. Bad hatches or freakishly large rogue wave perhaps.

It isn't the math itself, but I must say that statistics are a real bear, particularly when one finds oneself at the edge of the bell curve.
