Millers Falls Spiral Screwdriver Repair *PIC*

Greg Krummel
I recently acquired a Millers Falls No. 61 spiral screwdriver that occasionally binds in the ratchet. While trying to open the ratchet mechanism from the front end I reached a part that was threaded into the body (Number 21 in the patent US 1578866 A, and picture attached). The part is seized, and I tried to free the threads with penetrating oil and torque on the slots with no luck (it appeared whoever last tightened the tool applied enough torque to mushroom the faces of the slot).

Does anyone happen to have ideas or experience of how to remove this cap, or if there is another way to access the ratchet mechanism for cleaning and inspection?

Thanks!
