You post was a bit murky but making a guess of its direction I will provide the following observations.

Professional turner ( he turned parts in an English factory as well as eventually ran his own furniture and architectural parts making shop) Alan Batty kept a leather strop hung from his belt whilst turning. The factory sharpened tools at the start of the day and at noon, and rubbed them on leather in between, I was informed.

A professional carver here in town only sharpens his carving tools by rubbing on leather as he carves. (the leather may be charged , I didn't ask).
