Contemporary glues and properly dry stable wood invalidate the rationale for sprung joints.

It might be just the opposite. Traditional joints with hide glue were rubbed a bit and left, often without any clamping. I would be interested in seeing references to a hollow joint from a hand plane before 1880.

I think once you have the joint nice and flat it is just extra work to hollow it out.
