So true. I have used diamond hones, arkansas slips, and ceramic stones to shape and hone the curve of my Mora hook knife. Results iffy. Yesterday I looked at my granite flat plate, said "duh" and with a sheet of 320 wet/dry managed to do the tricky hand roll shown by Del Stubbs on his excellent Pinewood Forge site. A lot of problems can be addressed with what you own or can make if you loosen your mind set.
