As you're thinking about, and as Bill T. has mentioned, I've found them great for working edges. I've used mine for both hogging out and smoothing on an edge. The transition from hogging out to smoothing is almost Zen-like: I can't tell you exactly what I do differently, but my body responds to what my mind wants, most of the time.

In spite of the length of the cutting edge, they have not, in my hands, been as effective in removing wood from the face of a board (that is, wide slices of wood).
