Adjusting a plane.

Based on an article I read many years ago, I adjust a plane by sighting from the rear of the plane, not the front as is always shown in books, articles, etc. By time you see the blade when sighting from the front, it is extended too far. When sighting from the rear, the first glint of reflection sets the blade for a fine shaving. So, I am left wondering why sighting from the front seems to be the standard procedure.
