Things that make me cynical re: wwing comm (OT)

(hand tool woodworking community, that is).

Off topic, I've cut back on my forum viewing to mostly this forum, because discussions on here stay on track and there isn't an overarching editing machine trying to keep the views up at the cost of content, which also limits ridiculous responses from people who have little or no experience but assert that "everyone is correct".

But I saw something today that confirms why I don't attend woodworking events and why I so value being able to get advice from the warrens and the georges far above and beyond social gatherings.

I was reading another forum, and noticed that someone said they had tickets to see the studley chest and bench for sale.

Tickets? Like Pay? Are you kidding me?

I looked it up, and it's $25 to just look at (and photograph, apparently) the chest and talk to curators. Not $25 to see several dozen things, but to see pictures of a chest and bench that have been talked to death. It is advertised that the ticket revenue is the cost of providing the items to look at, and they very well may be, though I don't know what "the cost of providing the event" might be, it probably includes renting space from someone, apparently in "a barn" this time, and transporting and insuring a one of a kind item or two.

But, say you go into the event with your spouse or a child, you drop $50 to see something there are already a million photographs of?

And add this to the cynical part of me, I'm sure that at least one person (or a dozen) will take a video of it and use it to promote themselves on youtube, and attempt to insert themselves in the information flow as some kind of authority without a tiny fraction of any true accomplishment.

The amount of "the customer is always ripe" and shameless self promotion (often trying to sell things, like plans or videos or to generate views on youtube) by the unaccomplished is really disappointing to me. I think it's extremely misleading to beginners, especially.
