3-D Printing

Has anyone tried making a 3-D printed part for an old tool?

My #140 block plane is missing its side plate (as usual). I would like to make a 3-D printed replacement plate. I don't expect it to be functional or add any value to the plane--I am just curious to see if it can be done.

The local library has 3-D printers but I need to create an STL file from a CAD drawing. Can a CAD drawing be made from a manual ink-on-paper drawing?

Is this going to be way more complicated than it is worth?
Is it a foolish waste of time?
