Interesting Chute Plane *LINK*

There's an interesting chute board place on Jim Bodie's old tool list today:

At first, I thought the metal insert was a nicker and wondered why one would want a nicker on a chute plane. But it's not a nicker, it looks like a ware guard to protect the wooden body of the plane. The toe treatment is curious too. Does it serve a purpose, or is it purely ornamental?
