Images in wood

Hi All,

For many years, a particular image has stuck in my head. Here it is:

How would one render some approximation or essence of this image onto wood? The only thing I come up with is to focus on the darker layer, and try to inlay that, so that it would be slightly raised above the ground of the panel. Maybe a quilted maple panel to try to simulate rain and mist.

Any thoughts?
