Exactly - I do this because I like doing it, not because I need to do it to eat. I do it because I like the tools just as much as the result.
On this wood, a hand power planer [Makita, my scrub] leaves as good a finish as any of the other planes, I happen to like the progression and each plane is tuned to that step (and both planes are taking about the same amount of wood off).
On my Stanleys, I can't set cap iron close enough to the edge to be all that effective (due to shape, clearances, etc) and I find it fidgety (I have a custom plane w/custom cap where I can set the cap close), I just find my temperament is much better suited to a single iron.
