Arkansas stones become a lot coarser if they are abraded. I have never flattened or abraded my black Arkansas, in use since 1976. It still measures 1.000 inches thick. If you want a coarser stone use a Washita or soft Arkansas; there is no point in scratching a fine stone unless you want it to work like a cheaper soft Arkansas.
