Cast steel was invented in 1740. It was used for plane irons from that era until at least the 1920s. I am not sure that CAST STEEL was actually stamped on tools in the 18th century. Off the top of my head I recall stampings from about 1820 until the early 20th century. I don't think a cast steel stamping by itself is much help in dating a tool.
