...as long as you leave enough room for the wood to move around the mirror. If you recess the mirror into the underside of the top, you can tack in some stops around the opening to hold it there. Some double-sided foam tape will hold the mirror and keep it from rattling.

If you go with frame-and-panel, the mirror would still have to float in the frame somehow, and you'd have to deal with the panel detail on the top.
