By possibly combining Derek's excellent work with hardware ideas from this link, you might be able to achieve your desired vise, but with less expense. If I recall correctly the screws and hardware in this plan come from a inexpensive dumbbell set. I am too lazy to read through the details, but I believe there is a set of plans available on NCWW (free, Sketchup based I believe; if interested I can root through the site to find a link for you). Not sure the plans are critical though if you are making Derek's vise with modification.
