Some of the siding on our 1895 house is the original, 7/8" thick redwood. It's been necessary to remove some of it, and not all of it was reusable. I save the sweetest pieces, and I've had some on which you'd need a very good magnifying glass to see growth rings; planing end grain on that is like planing hard cheese.
