BENCH OF A LIFETIME
SHOP OWNER: Virgil Johnson
LOCATION: Versailles, KY
I built this bench in 1989 after tiring of using a lightweight bench with no vise. It is a cross between my design and one shown in Roy Underhill's book, The Woodwrights Workbook.
The overall dimensions of the bench are 39 W x 77 L x 36 H. The top is made from 8/4 white oak, and the base is poplar frame-and-panel construction. At one end, I built a 12-in.-wide tail vise that opens about 12 in.; on the other end, there is a small, no-name metal bench vise. The entire length of the front rail is fitted for bench dogs, which are used with the tail vise. Doors on both sides open to a large storage area with one shelf. I built holders in the doors for my chisels, backsaws, t-bevels and miscellaneous hand tools. . . . Virgil Johnson
