The Spindle Gouge - A Skew with Training Wheels or Something More?

๐Ÿ’พ

The spindle gouge is such a wonderous tool at the lathe. Especially in it's namesake niche. Yes it can be used to make bowls, boxes or almost anything it really shines in going with the grain in spindle turning. There are a few varieties of spindle gouges commonly used in the modern era and a a seemingly infinite number of ways to shape their grinds. But if you analyze the interaction of the edge of this tool and the fibers of the wood those varieties make sense as each has a place. Or you can learn how to utilize what you have to accomplish those differences. But the first step is understanding what is going on with the spindle gouge.

This is the introductory lecture to the tool with instruction to go play afterwards. Upcoming video's will be the exercise to refine your play.

New Series: Budget Workshop Build - What I'm Starting With - An Apartment Too! @wortheffortDIY

๐Ÿ’พ

So the workshop build begins. Actually, TWO WORKSHOPS. I purchased the least expensive livable home in Texas with plans to use it as a start. Since my production work can't pause for more than a few weeks I need a small temporary shop while I spend the next year building a nice shop. Plan is to divide this small 600 sq/ft block home into two parts with a temporary wall. One side a shop, the other side an apartment.

This series is going to be published to a new channel I started just for this build, @wortheffortDIY . I hope to get four seasons of content from this endeavor. First season is the absolutely bare minimum on an extreme budget. Second season we'll build a workshop. Third, we'll use said workshop to build a studio to be proud of. Fourth, we'll turn our attention to the outdoors with furniture, fixtures and a garden.

But first I have to get this atrocity ready.

Saw Kit Sale - Moving the Shop - Deleting Later

๐Ÿ’พ

As you may have heard we are moving shop again. Closing on a home that'll need a temporary shop inside while I build the real one out back. I set aside last week and did a production fun of mallets as a little fundraiser.

But as I was packing up I found a whole tub of saw kits I made back during a beginner hand tool class series in 2018. So to reduce inventory and raise a little money I'm blowing these out. $20 + another $7 for shipping. US Only.

These handles are based on the Disston D7 but built for the Stanley Sharptooth Saw blades in both 20" and 26" varieties. I've been using this setup in videos since 2018and keep the smaller one behind the seat in my truck to break down material at the store.

We're moving into a new workshop. For the seventh time since starting this woodworking channel back in 2011 I'm relocating my shop. But for the first time I'll be an owner and not a renter. Progress! So let's discuss what the shop will be like.

Hand Plane Restoration - Handyman vs Bailey Comparison - Worth It?

๐Ÿ’พ

Restoring Vintage Hand Planes can be fun and rewarding. But prices of popular old stock can be expensive. The Handyman series of planes from Stanley were a bottom tier tool so they're plentiful and less expensive. But can they be made to perform as good as a modern plane or vintage Bailey/Bedrock?

Adventures in Turning the Worlds Greatest Tool Handle- A Stream Punk Slacker Stack River Epoxy Mess

๐Ÿ’พ

Sometimes you have to make something cool for yourself. I feel that way about tool handles. There's a sense of pride picking up a fully customized tool you made and the effort to make it is amortized over a lifetime. I got a new parting tool for woodturning a while back and never handled it. Parting tools for me are something I'm unlikely to wear out at the lathe as they aren't used that much. Hence the opportunity to make a truly wild gouge handle. Also, Carter and Son's just came out with a wooden handle adapter. So if I make something really cool I could use it with other tools too.

So the adventure began with the mandate to make something truly outlandish, gaudy, and awesome. In other words, "The World's Greatest Tool Handle".

I'd like to see any wild tool handles you create. Tag me on Instagram at @wortheffort_ww

Spindle Turning - Start with the Skew - Turning Basics #04 Part One - Ramp up Your Learning Curve

๐Ÿ’พ

Spindle turning is the absolute best way to ramp up your woodturning skills. There is no other discipline in the craft that refines tool control more than turning a spindle. The skew is the primary tool of spindle turning and it has an unearned reputation of being difficult. In reality it can be the most useful and forgiving if you just learn some basics and do a little practice over an afternoon. Learn to plane, peel, slice, and scrape with a skew and the entire craft of woodturning will open up to you.

Spindle Turning - Skew Techniques - Turning Basics #04 Part Two - 4 Basic Cuts and More...

๐Ÿ’พ

Learning to work spindles with a skew is not difficult, but it also isn't an instantaneous skill to acquire. You might actually have to put in an hour or two. Ya, it doesn't take much. The first step is understanding how the tool rest, bevel, cutting edge, and your movement interact. Yep, we're talking the A, B, C, D's of turning. Then it's a simple matter of trying.

Spindle Turning - Skew Practice Projects - Turning Basics #04 Part Three - Get Paid Learn the Skew

๐Ÿ’พ

Practice doesn't have to be repetitive boringness. Find small projects that require a skill that also make good impulse buys or gifts. To demonstrate spindle turning practice with the skew I demonstrate two of my better selling impulse buys at markets, a dibbler and a door stop. Low cost material, quick to make, skill refining... that's what we want.

Shop Tour and State of Channel 2026 -Major Changes Coming

๐Ÿ’พ

It's been a few years since we've done a walk thru of the shop and I showed what's come in and what's left in the woodworking shop. I also typically use this annual tour to discuss how the channel did and where it's heading.

But this year we are announcing the biggest change in the channel of the past 15+ years. We are starting a new channel and migrating over much of the content in order to future proof the educational content y'all like so much. Then future uploads will focus strictly on the skill, knowledge, project and human resource base of fine woodworking. We'll leave the adventure to the DIY channel.

So that leaves me with 3 YouTube Channels:

Grinding Wheels for Hand & Turning Tools - What Size and Grit do you need?

๐Ÿ’พ

Heat is the enemy in grinding as it can destroy a tool quicker than you can remove metal. Get the tool too hot and you'll lose temper. Which is why for some woodworkers I recommend having one wheel as coarse as possible. There are also good and bad reasons for size and medium of wheels for your grinder. Explanation who, what, and why in video.

Mallet Inventory is Back Before Holidays while supplies last

๐Ÿ’พ

Some seven or eight years ago I sold hundred or so mallets. Been questioned when I'd do another run ever since. So this year I did a version 2 in hard maple. Sold out in a few weeks. Kinda expected when new products come out the first run sells fast and the second run stocks you for a year. But this time second run sold out quick. I had just enough material left to make 12 more so I found the time this past week to do just that so I wouldn't disappoint so many this holiday season. But note: likely these will be gone soon and I won't have time to do another run of these for a while because I have other production runs to do.

Generally, due to the effort needed to make a book, I've also found the knowledge more accurate, relevant, and detailed. Austin Studio Tour 2025

๐Ÿ’พ

The Austin Studio Tour is a free walking (driving) tour that grew out of the East & West Studio Tours of years past. It's advertised as the Largest Artist Event in Texas as in 2025 it comprised of 719 registered artists/craftsmen at over 300 locations across Austin proper. With many locations featuring live music, participatory activities, food, and frivolity this has to be one of the most family friendly free events in the city.

For artists it allows for a little socialization (important when you work most of the year alone in a workshop) and networking opportunities. Besides selling items many are able to show off their style and quality to future individuals and companies they'll work with in the coming year.

So if you are into art, craft, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, linen, leather work or anything else that takes skill and practice to matter... then this free event is a must for you.

Keep an eye out for 2026 information. You don't want to contract FOMO.

Hustling Sales at the Art Market as a Woodworker - Art Squared, San Marcos

๐Ÿ’พ

"Working" Markets is different than setting up at one. You have to work it. This is my first market back since the start of COVID 5+ years ago. I'm definitely out of practice. Feel free to comment what you do different. I commented in video what needs to be better. based upon a decade of doing this before COVID.

And if you're interested in the schtick I do to take advantage of turning tops at markets... https://youtu.be/wpjogm7kJdQ .

Texas Furniture Maker Show 2025 - Kerrville, Texas

๐Ÿ’พ

The Texas Furniture Maker Show in Kerrville, TX is a pilgrimage of shock and awe for me each year and 2025 was no different. There's surprises and new idea inspiration in every piece. I've been going to them for about 11 years now (links to to previous tours below) and each year I sneak away a few more ideas I can incorporate into future projects.

The event is thrown ever fall by the Kerrville Arts Community. It's a free event but donations are welcome. And item sales drive the event. Show goes through December 12th, 2025 (10am - 4pm Tues-Sat.) at the Kerr Arts and Culture Center in Kerrville Texas. ( https://www.texasfurnituremakersshow.org/ )

On November 8th (a Saturday) they will have a public lecture all can attend for a minor fee with acclaimed furniture maker John Gallis and Kelly Maxwell. An award ceremony will also be on the 8th from 5:30 to 8pm. See their website for details.

New Tips to Help Joinery like Dovetails Learned from Experience over Time

๐Ÿ’พ

Due to diminishing muscle memory and lack of practice I've developed a few tricks, or should I say crutches, to improve my joinery. Especially my dovetails. Experience teaches and many times it's to compensate for learned weaknesses. These are some of my lessons and some new tools I use to help.
