Damn tools did it again!

7 January 2026 at 03:49

I looked everywhere for my right angle clamps. For like 2 weeks in the process of building a console cabinet for a friend. Anticipated needing them but couldn’t find them for the life of me. So I finally ordered a new set and when I went to find them a home, I opened up a drawer and there was the first set! I hate it when that happens!

KM Tools

3 January 2026 at 13:23

Anyone ever order from KM Tools? I ordered a marking gauge on 12/21 and it looks like it hasn’t shipped yet. I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt with the holidays but there have been seven business days in between and they are not responding to my emails. Is this the norm for them?

When did you stop thinking of yourself as a novice?

4 December 2025 at 15:42

I feel like we are all beginners for a long time in our own minds. I have been at it for a few years now with a variety of projects under my belt. Recently had the opportunity to toss my name in for a directory of makers at my chip’s school. It surprised me how long it took me to have the confidence to commit. The deciding factor was a flurry of requests from friends looking for things made.

So what made you think that maybe you’re better at this than you think you are?

Just used shellac for the first time

31 August 2025 at 12:58

All I can say is that it’s…different. Gloves stiffening up as I’m applying because it’s literally drying that fast. Goes on beautifully. Kind of weird to be able to take the applicator I was using last night, dip it in the jar, it’s ready to use again! Using it to seal some old doors after stripping and before paint.

PSA: Clean your diamond plates more frequently than you think

4 August 2025 at 17:10

Doing my periodic sharpening sesh this weekend and decided to brush the plates with water and a brass brush and blow clean/dry with compressed air after each blade/chisel. Made a massive difference in efficiency and now instead of having to start at 240 to reset my primary bevel I start at 800. No one ever talks about it, but clean your stones way more frequently than you expect to!

Watch Box Project (Update)

Watch Box Project (Update)

A month ago I got the bug to make this. You all encouraged me to just start making and here we are. Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. Tweaked a few things like adding a drawer and used sliding dovetails instead of dominos in the original build. It is my most ambitious project to date and a solid effort if I do say so myself. It started out as a watch box and somewhere along the way became a jewelry box for my wife. Hopefully one of our daughters will want it someday. Thank you for the encouragement!
