Turning
Buffing Questions

I am turning a commemorative plate out of cherry and am seeking some advice on finishing this plate (12" in diameter).  I normally sand to 400x and then have simply buffed plates I have made in the past with tripoli and white diamond compounds and then applied a coating of carnauba wax with a buffing wheel.  I am using a Oneway buffing system, which is very similar to the beall buffing system.  I would like to apply a finish to the plate this time around and then buff it out, but not sure if that duplicates processes, or creates problems.

If I apply an oil finish first, then buff it out with Tripoli, white diamond, and carnauba wax, will that work? Do the Tripoli and white diamond compounds interfere or remove the oil finish   Or should I buff the plate first with the Tripoli and white diamond compounds first before applying the oil finish and then the carnauba wax?

Some of these finishes now have blended wax/oil mixtures.   Once I have applied a blended oil/wax finish, will any subsequent tripoli/diamond compound application remove it when these compounds are applied via buffing wheels?  Does the carnauba wax application simply become redundant?

Any help appreciated.

Doug
