On many forums there are more substantial explanations of how something is created because it is much easier to include a number of pictures that can be discussed.

Most magazines both hard copy and on line versions offer detailed instructions how the author created the subject of the article.

As Mark said trying to teach exactly how something was created can be difficult and just because the author can show and describe how it was done does not necessarily mean that the reader will have the skills needed to do the same thing. Those skills are best learned from an experienced turner in a hands on situation.

When I was first teaching myself how to turn I was following the instructions provided by Richard Raffan in his book "Turning Boxes" on how to back hollow a box blank. Well, let me just say after snatching the blank out of my chuck three or four times I finally decided that a little more turning experience was required before I could successfully duplicate what Mr. Raffan wrote in his book.

My turning improved considerably once I spent time with someone who could show me how to do things. Turning classes are the way to improve but practice makes perfect. The wonderful part of taking a turning class is that you have the opportunity to learn from everyone in the class. Over the years that I taught I learned from every student I had and we all improved our skills.
