On a completely different note, here's my shop mascot, a Lignum vitae bust of a Rastafarian man that I bought in Jamaica about 25 years ago. I had been looking for some kind of wooden carving to take home with me, but most of the carvings I saw were junky tourist-quality stuff. Then I stumbled on this guy's work at a little stand south of Negril, near the Pickle Parrot. I spotted this bust and it spoke to me, but I didn't see anyone to haggle with. I had brought some antique American carving chisels with me in anticipation of some horse-trading and this was my opportunity. So, I walked around behind the booth and found the carver at work, sitting on a rock and carving another piece with a dull chisel and a couple screwdrivers that looked like they had been sharpened on a cinder block. He was refining the surfaces with shards of glass and some well-worn sandpaper. Needless to say, when he saw the treasures I had brought, he was most amenable to a deal.
