It's art. It's designed to look like stacked leather. IMHO, a stack of wooden cookies is not a good idea for a tool that is supposed to be functional, and is not supposed to beat you up while you are trying to build something. A strong, flexible wood, with no grain runout would work much better, and you could adjust the cross section for an appropriate amount of flexibility.
