Definitions: Stile/Rail vs Door/Lid? ????

When is a stile a stile? A rail, maybe?  Or, does something else define what it is? There are so many joining layouts, so how is that stick identified?

I could give a reasonable answer if we were looking at a cupboard on a wall with a vertical stick and side hinge with rails butting into the stiles.  ... But what about the top-hinged door?

Then, we encounter a box, with a lid. Frame and panel. Well, which is which? Not so easy with mitered corners. Hinged; on the ....? No hinges?

Is there another name I obviously forgot?
