In Response To For those who miss David's steel posts (Bruce McCrory)

A lot of momentum lost in this forum after the complaints about David's supposedly out of topic posts.

Does anybody think we're a very conservative community in regards to innovation and new materials exploration? For all the seemingly pointless chopping of 2x4s and rope cutting that the knife crowd enthusiastically engage in, they are a more dynamic community in regards of experimenting with new steels.

Consider CPM Magnacut, a new steel developed 2 or 3 years ago, a new PM steel, designed by Larrin Thomas here in Pittsburgh, which would probably work really well for woodworking tools.

Also, in development, a steel tailored to forgers called Apexultra (https://www.apexultrasteel.com/) (https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/12/02/laboratory-development-of-apexultra-forging-knife-steel/), developed by Larrin and others.

It's interesting to note that the composition of these steels is not a secret, no secret formula, like PM-V11, to convince you that it is something with properties so special that they should be kept secret.

It seems to me, that when a new tool appears in our hobby market, like chisels, the selling features are mostly cosmetic, often very refined finishes or extravagant tolerances. Yet the steels are still regular carbon steel, A2 or PM-V11.
