I believe you and onemanband are right; I kind-of wished that there was more to it because the idea of absorbing shock appeals to me. I just finished the head of a smallish mallet, and I am about to make a handle for it. I could do what that guy did, but if it's just looks, I'll pass on that. I may turn an oval-shaped handle instead to give it a nice look and actually have some positive functionality as far as grip goes. I did insert some metal in the head to give it a good "hit"-- as the pool players say.
