Hand plane lot

Hand plane lot

Well Reddit, I did a thing.

Been using handtools for wood working over the past year. Yesterday, I stumbled upon this lot. 35 total planes, and a box or two of spare parts.

Most are complete. Poster wasn’t willing to haggle on price, but added in a few miscellaneous pieces I liked such as saws, chisels, and other vintage tools.

$250 total.

Did I overpay? Any particular ones I should look for?

I legitimately need several of them in my shop. I figure slowly fix the rest and maybe sell? I certainly don’t need this many but enjoy the restoration process.

Thanks for looking! I’m happy even if I never sell a single plane. They’ll get used - eventually!

An extendable live edge dining table

An extendable live edge dining table

The client asked for an expandable table, but also mentioned their dream of owning a live edge one, so I did both. I wanted it to look complete on its own, while making sure the leaves would be simple and quick to attach. Here’s my approach.

Mobile bar idea

Mobile bar idea

Hey guys, just got a couple pictures of a mobile bar I made at work. Honestly except for the tabletop which was 3 pieces of 12” oak that I used a biscuit jointer on and epoxied, this one didn’t really require too many fancy tools.. just a table saw, jig saw, normal handyman stuff. Still a newbie and YouTubing every day, but I am fascinated with the hobby though and just got the dewalt planers (handheld and tabletop), a 12” jointer and a 14”jet bandsaw. Really looking forward to what the future brings. I have some things in the works already. More to come.

What do you think of the bar? Tips? Ideas? Always welcome, thanks!

Miter Gauge Options in 2025

15 May 2025 at 10:25

I've recently bought a table saw again (long story), and I am in need of a decent miter gauge. Previous posts suggest that Incra is overall the best bang for the buck. That being said, I see that there are some new players on the scene. Specifically, looking at the Woodpeckers in-dexable gauge.

Let's discuss, what miter gauges should one consider in 2025? Perhaps we should discuss a budget option, and a more expensive/boutique option?

Ants & Cracks on tabletop

Ants & Cracks on tabletop

I’m sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, but I have a question about a customized wooden desk that I bought from a store.

They already took the table and repaired it when cracks started showing after a few months at places I don’t even put things on. 2 months later, more cracks started to appear again. They said it was because of humidity (we live in a humid country so I thought they should’ve thought of that before selling the table? or am I wrong for thinking that).

Now, ants started to appear after the second crack started to show. I already wiped everything and cleaned the tabletop. I rarely eat at my desk and when I do, I always make sure there aren’t any crumbs left. They aren’t really focused on one spot, except I noticed they sometimes go in the cracks.

Did the ants appear because of the table’s humidity/cracks? Is there a way to prevent the tabletop from cracking in the future? Should I just get a refund? TIA!

Glue laminating to maintain straightness?? Central America, art framing.

15 May 2025 at 10:30

Hey Guys, I've been on a break from woodworking for a bit and now I'm working on something new and need some opinions.

My wife is an artist (and we own an art gallery).

We're in Central America, where good dry straight wood is a challenge to source.

We're making stretcher bars for canvas, and here's my question.

Will laminating multiple boards together reduce the likelihood of warping later?

For example, a cutting board made from one solid piece will warp but one made from a number of glued up pieces will not.

Same theory applies?

Butternut Dwarves!!

Butternut Dwarves!!

Butternut Dwarves, an Axedwarf and a Rogue. Oiled up and cured now. These guys are carved out of Butternut, not basswood. Boiled Linseed Oil on the left and regular Danish Oil on the right. Both are lightly buffed with paste finishing wax as well. I dont notice any difference in the finish with wax. Kind of the diametric opposite of what I expected, especially considering what I often see it do on Basswood.

Still, a fun experiment. I think Butternut will be a special use case wood. For when I want an absolute minimum finish, and I want lots of grain to show, this is a great option.

General 380 8" jointer

14 May 2025 at 13:49
I have an opportunity to get a General 380 8" jointer 1HP 120V/240V re-wire-able motor for C$350, I've read what info I can find online about it but the lack of many spare parts is a bit of a concern, I can find knives and standard hardware like bolts, nut, bearings etc, but I don't want to find that I have to get new bits custom machined right after I go to all the effort of moving it / setting it up in my shop. From what I've read the price seems ok so I'll go take a look at it with straight edge / machine square / feeler gauges etc etc to check it out, but I would be interested in other folks opinions.
1. Is that a reasonable price - C$350?
2. Is there anything in particular I should inspect (apart from the obvious for a jointer) for this particular model?

TIA

Turning Tool Sets and insert tip centre height?

15 May 2025 at 06:03
I was looking at this 9 piece turning tool set. 6 of the tools have the carbide tool tip at the same height with the steel shaft measuring 20x20mm. 3 of the tools were 16x20mm and tool tips were 4mm lower using TCMT inserts. I thought this was wrong, but the sales stuff were adamant it was correct. Maybe there is something else to consider? I check my carbide tool holders and the centre height is the same for all tools. I also noted several tool sets with 10mm and 16mm were all had the tips at the same height.
I don't know. Maybe I am just over thinking things.

Thanks in advance,
