I guess if someone thinks a toolmaker who wades into the details is wasting their time but making furniture for a hobby and needling away at joints isn't, or buying japanese tools or whatever else, I don't really get it. 

Even making furniture for ourselves is a nonsensical thing, unless you can find *really* cheap material. I've never been able to find good materials as cheaply as I can find discarded old furniture, and some of it surprisingly wonderful.
