A quick public service announcement if you store photos on CDs or DVDs. Be sure to head to your local office supply store and pick up a water based marker designed specifically for writing on CDs. If you use a Sharpie (or equivalent) over a period of years the solvents will eventually eat away at the backing of the CD rendering it unreadable.

Also, CDs and DVDs like to be stored for the long term in a cool, dark place. Don't leave them sitting in the sunshine.

Finally, if your pictures are really important to you, there are several companies that make fireproof safes that are designed specifically for media. A standard fireproof safe is rated so that you can put papers in it. Unfortunately, the plastic in CDs and DVDs warps at temperatures much lower than that. The media rated safes are designed to keep the contents cool enough that the discs won't warp.
