No I just use the in camera meter. I haven't used a light meter in years now that I can view the image on screen or look at histograms.
Just for a point of view. If you have manual metering in your camera and you set the meter setting to 0 you are doing the same thing the camera would do in Auto mode. the only difference is I can very easily change the exposure by simply moving the shutter dial or aperture dial.
If I use the auto settings, S, A, or P, then I have to press the override button and select +1 +2 etc. It's just slower which is why I use manual. Also on auto modes if you zoom in or out and change the amount of area your camera see's, it can change the exposure. In manual mode the exposure won't change from what you set it.
