My experience has been that you can look at the grooves to see the order that they will reference the linkage of the chuck. Putting them into position and then putting a rubber band around them will exert enough pressure evenly to allow them to engage with the chuck and connect as you turn the chuck key. I think the keys are typically all numbered, but only the first slot on the chuck is labeled.
At least that has been my experience with Nova, OneWay and Axminster. Can't say definitively about Vicmark, as I don't have one.
Still, I'm late to the discussion and it seems you have solved the problem. But the rubber band part really helped me getting things together again.
