I had a Powermatic 3520A for several years. I always turned off the rotation by turning the speed control knob down to zero. During a turning session, the only time I touched the red knob was when I turned the lathe on and when I shut it down. Since I knew I always turned the speed to zero after I turned, I didn't have to worry about a heavy chunk flying off the lathe.
