I'll have to look up what "chawan" is - I'm intrigued now.

I think oak is a much underrated wood for turning. I've found some amazing burled figure in oak. The best came, oddly not from a burl, but the buttress found at the base of some trees. Some sources say these buttresses are often found on shallowly rooted trees. There may be some root fungus involved as well. That's probably why the two I've cut into to date came from trees that came down in a storm! Maybe our resident arborist has some enlightenment.
