Two dear friends taught me this acronym very early in my woodturning. My departed friend Ed Moore, who used to frequent WC said he learned this acronym from another friend Don Riggs.

SAFER

Speed - Check the SPEED before you turn the lathe on

Aside - Step ASIDE before you turn the lathe on

Fasten - Be sure to FASTEN the banjo and tool rest before you turn the lathe on

Eyes - Put EYE protection on before you turn the lathe on

Rotate - ROTATE the work to see if it clears before you turn the lathe on

Remember S-A-F-E-R, and respect the bandsaw.
