I never had luck turning a MT. Even reading David Reed Smith's article on the cutting jig, it just seemed like overkill. I had better results carving them down and pounding them into the headstock spindle.

Duh! I never considered shortening the taper. (queue sound of light bulb kicking on) Gonna have to revisit this.

Also, thanks for your wand/spindle article. Much appreciated. *If* we can come out in NJ by Oct, this will give me something else to turn at the NJ Forestry Festival than spin tops. I found that kids love handmade toys even if they are not up to our standards. Specially when they see it made just for them ... and *they* get to pick out the marker colors ;)
